Minimal miles meat

Bred at St Andrews Brewery, raised on Hawkes Farm

It’s a four-kilometre drive, via Limestone Rd and Truemans Rd, from St Andrews Beach Brewery to Hawkes Farm on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula.

But this collaboration runs far deeper than proximity.

When two farmers meet…

When Richard Hawkes, sixth generation vegetable farmer, met Louis Purchase – brewer, small-batch livestock-owner and orchard farmer – beer and potatoes was just the beginning.

The two share a passion around quality produce, zero-waste, and caring for land and animals, that both Hawkes Farm and St Andrews Beach Brewery have long stood for.

Alongside his day job as Head Brewer, Louis skilfully cultivated the apple and pear orchard on the old horse track behind the Fingal brewery, while starting to breed pigs.

Crossbreeding for higher survival rates and healthy, happy pigs, his Duroc-Large Black-Wessex Saddleback mix proved a quality combination.

And just as neighbouring ancestral farmers would help one another out, Richard offered Hawkes Farm to Louis as a minimal miles, minimal stress option to raise the pigs.

Today, they enjoy roaming the three-hectare paddock (30,000m²), eating waste vegetables and spent beer grain – providing quality manure and pork.
